Fast Facts
Sunset Sudbury School is South Florida’s first and only Sudbury model school. It is a non-profit private school based on the principles of freedom, trust, and responsibility. Below are some quick facts about the school.
Start Date: The school will open August 2010.
Location: We are aggressively seeking a site for our school. The ideal site would have a fantastic outdoor space for explorers, three bathrooms, a reading/quiet room, a meeting room, computer/video area and indoor playspace. Davie seems to have the most to offer but we are open to any area in Broward near the highway system.
Tuition: Yearly tuition is set at $6600 for the 1st child in a family, $4950 for the 2nd child, and $3300 for the 3rd child. There is a 10% discount for tuition paid in full at the beginning of the year. Part-time tuition is available for children 6 and under.
Grades/Ages: Students ages 4 to 19 can attend. While we do not segregate students by age or any other characteristic, our students are in the traditional age ranges for kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school.
School Calendar: We will follow Broward County Public School calendar for the 2009/2010 school year.
School Hours: We will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:30pm.
Before & After-care: The school will be open to students from 8:00am to 9:00am and from 4:30pm to 5:30pm only upon special request and arrangements made in advance.
Attendance Requirement: Students may arrive and leave school when they want provided they stay for at least five hours per day and maintain the following minimum weekly hours: 25 hours per week for ages 10 and above, 20 hours per week for ages 7 to 9, and 15 hours per week for ages 4 to 6.
Governance: Rules for day-to-day life at the school are made by School Meeting, where each student and staff member has one vote. All students serve periodic terms on the Judicial Committee, which deals with rule violations. Parents, along with students and staff, comprise the Assembly which votes on large-scale decisions such as annual budget and candidates for graduation.
Application: Applications for admission are accepted year-round.
Enrollment: Students can enroll any time during the school year, provided space is available. Enrollment is limited to 20 students for the school’s first year (2010/2011).
Parent Involvement: Parents are welcome to volunteer their time and talents at the school through our formal volunteer program.
